All Angels youth help food pantry

The Church of All Angels youth group presented the Spearfish Food Pantry $502 plus donated food items for their "Souper Bowl of Caring" project conducted on Super Bowl Sunday (2/5/12). This program helps young people across America develop a stronger connection to their communities by caring for their neighbors in need. This is the second year this group has participated in the project, choosing the Spearfish Community Food Pantry for their donations. What a great group of kids, and what a wonderful job they did for the pantry!

Community Foundation grant awarded to pantry

About 40 persons shared breakfast at the Bum Steer restaurant Friday (1/13/12) as part of the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce "Morning Mixer." But the real purpose for the gathering was to witness the presentation of several grants by the Spearfish Area Community Foundation to local non-profit organizations that provide a wide range of valuable goods and services.

Foundation president Priscilla Romkema introduced representatives from 10 different organization that received the grants -- including $2,000 to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry. Those valuable funds will support the purchase and distribution of food items to needy citizens in the Spearfish and St. Onge communities. Eleven churches operate the pantry, which last year moved to a new facility at the Spearfish Recreation and Aquatics Center -- thanks, in part, to an earlier grant from the Spearfish Area Community Foundation.

Pantry president Karen Miller (top left in above photo) thanked the foundation for their staunch support of pantry operations.

"These funds will allow us to continue to provide assistance to needy families and individuals, often reaching as many as 400 to 500 persons each month," said Miller. "Those numbers include many who are unemployed, underemployed, elderly, single-parent families, and individuals who are in a major life transition."

Creekside strikes again!

Mrs. Damuth's Fourth Grade Class from Creekside Elementary School visited the pantry on Wednesday, December 14th -- and they brought with them 106 pounds of food to help feed needy families! They bought the food at Lueder's Food Center with money they had earned from pie sales. Creekside Elementary students have become quite popular around the pantry, since we see their smiling faces a lot. Thanks to Michelle Damuth and her wonderful group of Fourth Graders!

Scouts food drive pulls in 7,632 lbs.....and counting!

Volunteers had their hands full at the Spearfish Community Food Pantry during the 2011 Scout Food Drive conducted in Spearfish and St. Onge last Saturday 12/10/11

One of the biggest and most gratifying food drive campaigns of the year comes in December when area scouts go door-to-door to drop off empty plastic donation bags......and then return to pick them up, stuffed with donations from generous local citizen!

This year, donations came flooding in to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry on Saturday morning, December 10th.

And dozens of volunteers of all ages were waiting at the pantry. Our camera was there to catch some of the action, and you'll find photos in the Pantry Gallery.

Finally, at about 9:30 a.m., the onslaught began.

Trucks, sedans, pickups....... vehicles of all sorts began arriving at the pantry carrying non-perishable food items intended to help bolster dwindling food reserves that seem to be in increasing demand across the county.

And it's certainly no different in Spearfish and St. Onge, where the number of needy patrons come to the pantry each week in need of some assistance.

"We continue to be astounded at the enormous support that members of the community give to the pantry," said pantry president Karen Miller.

"With nearly 7,700 pounds of newly-donated food on our shelves, we're confident that we'll be able to respond favorably to the needy neighbors in our area. And it's especially gratifying at this time of the year, as families gather for the holiday season. No one should have to go without some food on the table this holiday season."

Miller heaped particular praise on the many young people who turned out to help with the food drive.

"Scouts of all ages from around the Spearfish and St. Onge area again demonstrated what a difference they make in our community."

"We couldn't have done it without the kids!"

And it wasn't just scouts. 4-H members and other youth groups showed up to lend a hand and complete a task in just a few hours that would have taken regular food pantry volunteers many days to complete.

"The real heroes, of course, are the members of our community who have reached into their hearts and onto their own pantry shelves to help fill ours. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the many local residents and businesses who've given such wonderful support to our cause.

The Spearfish Community Food Pantry is a non-profit organizations serving needy neighbors in Spearfish and St. Onge. It truly is a “wonderful life” when you have friends likeNorthern Hills Cinema and Prestige Auto Sales in Spearfish. Both businesses are sponsoring two weekends of great movies,and the proceeds will benefit the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

Queen City Lions Club gives pantry a boost

Creekside kids aid Food Pantry

One of the most heartwarming things we've seen this fall is the remarkable steps taken by students at the new Creekside Elementary School who stepped up to help needy neighbors with a successful food drive mobilized under the moniker of "Community Day."

Nine-year-old Jaxson Enninga is
the son of Rick & Michelle Enninga.

A story by Heather Murschel in the Thursday edition (11/17/11) of the Black Hills Pioneer provided details of how young Jaxson Enninga -- a third grader -- suggested that the school conduct a food drive. School officials embraced the idea and helped organize the week-long drive, encouraging students and Spearfish residents to bring nonperishable food items to the school.

And they did just that! The campaign culminated today -- Community Day -- with the delivery of nearly 700 pounds of food to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

"It's just awesome that young people are not only recognizing needs within their community, but that they're stepping up and taking action to help meet some of those needs," said pantry president Karen Miller.

Like food pantries all across the country, the Spearfish pantry has witnessed a significant increase in the number people who rely upon them to help feed families.

"Keeping pace with the needs of the community is always a concern," said Miller. "But with the great support of citizens across the community -- including these young people -- we're optimistic that we'll be able to accommodate needy families through the holiday season.

Countryside Church weighs in with food drive!

The good people at Countryside Community Church have been promoting a weekend food drive to benefit the Spearfish Community Food Pantry, and that promotion paid off big this weekend (Sept. 17-18) with a tremendous response.

More than half a ton of non-perishable food items were deposited in the bed of two pickup trucks parked in the church entryway for both Saturday evening and Sunday morning services at the church.

Christina Fuhr, a counselor and Creative Arts Director at Countryside, provided an extra plug for the drive at the opening of each service, letting attendees know that -- even if they forgot to bring food items -- the pickups would remain in front of the church for several hours, allowing folks time to return home or get to a nearby grocery store, if they were so inclined. And it seemed to work. Both pickups were filled to the brim. The final tally indicated that Countryside donors provided just over 1,008 pounds of food and several cash donations!

"What a wonderful response by the people of Countryside," said pantry president Karen Miller.

"With growing numbers of families relying upon our services, it's gratifying to know that members of the community are stepping forward to help those in need. Our deep thanks to the leadership of Countryside and the many wonderful people of that church who've stepped forward with generous hearts!"

Volunteers from Countryside Community Church are also staffing the pantry during September. Each of the 11 churches that operate the pantry take turns recruiting volunteer workers to help unload foodstuffs, stock shelves, serve needy neighbors, and a myriad of other critical duties that allow the pantry to fulfill its mission of service within the community.

Walmart supports Spearfish pantry!

Walmart encouraged shoppers to support the Spearfish Food Pantry on September 17th and 18th. They set up large food baskets in the lobby, and pantry board members volunteered to help collect the more than 4,160 pounds of donated food! REMAX collects "a ton of food" for pantry

REMAX in the Hills has stepped forward and provided valuablesupport for the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

REMAX realtors and staff collected food donations fromshoppers last weekend at Spearfish Walmart on Friday (8/26) and Safeway onSaturday (8/27). When they were done,they had collected 2,230 pounds, which they delivered earlier Monday (8/29) tothe pantry.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” said pantrypresident Karen Miller.

It addition to the truck load of food, REMAX collected $162.00in cash, which will assist the pantry in purchasing non-donated food.

Stamping out hunger -- a step closer!

Despite a bit of wind and rain, hundreds of area residents sacked up groceries and left them for their letter carrier Saturday (5/14/11) as part of the "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign to benefit the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

Local carriers and the U.S. Postal Service have been participating in the local campaign for several years. The donations go to help the local pantry better serve our neighbors in need in the Spearfish and St. Onge vicinities.

"What a wonderful job the letter carriers have done over the years -- and continue to do -- by making this huge effort that benefits needy people in our area," said pantry president Karen Miller.

"Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign by making such generous donations of food. It helps us re-stock our dwindling inventory of food supplies, and allows us to continue our mission. And the postal workers do such a terrific job collecting and then delivering the food to the pantry. It's a BIG job, and it adds considerably to their work load, but they do it with smiles on their faces. They're a wonderful group of guys and gals!" said Miller.

The final tally on the amount of food collected this year was 3,179 pounds, as the postal workers weighed the donations as they came in to the Spearfish Post Office. Last year, more than 4,200 pounds were collected. The rainy, cool weather this year may have cut in to the level of donations.

This Saturday: fill a bag - feed families!

We're excited about this weekend! It's the Letter Carriers' Food Drive on Saturday, May 14, 2011. And you can help!

This Saturday is when letter carriers around the northern Black Hills and all across the country, working in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting food for families in need.

It's always a very busy time for those of us at the Spearfish Community Food Pantry, but we relish this opportunity!

You can help by filling a bag of non-perishable food items and leaving it at your mailbox for pickup and delivery to our food pantry. By donating items like canned meat, fish, soup, vegetables, bottled juice, cereal, pasta and rice that don't require refrigeration, you can help us stock our shelves of these dwindling items. We ask that you do not donate items that have expired or that are in glass containers.

Your generosity will help us serve the many needy families in the Spearfish and St. Onge area.

Rodeo Team lends hand to pantry

The Spearfish High School/Junior High Rodeo Team grabbed the bull by the horns this month (April 2011) and collected a lot of food for the Spearfish Food Pantry. The club requires members to perform two community service projects throughout the year, and club members voted to conduct a food drive for the Spearfish Community Food Pantry as one of their projects.

Pack 17 scouting events benefit pantry

Local scouts have stepped forward with another generous contribution to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

This time, it was the energetic scouts from Pack 17 that collected $112.53 from a cake sale and another $46 from a raffle – all to benefit the pantry.

“It’s absolutely amazing how much scouting has done for the pantry in recent years,” said pantry president Karen Miller.

“Their food drives, financial contributions and other efforts have been a real boon to the pantry and the folks we serve. We deeply appreciate the efforts of Pack 17 and their leaders.”

There are 82 scouts in Pack 17, which is the largest group in the Black Hills Council

Proceeds from the two recent events amounted to $158.53 and were delivered Friday (3/18/11) to the Food Pantry. You'll find more photos related to this event and earlier pantry activities in our Pantry Gallery.

Scout Helpers Ann Evridge and Melissa Lichtenberger said the cake sales money came from a contest to name the “best cake” during the recent Blue and Gold Banquet honoring 101 years of scouting. Donors “voted” for their favorite cake by placing a donation to the Food Pantry in the can next to the cake they liked best. More than 25 cakes were in the competition.

“There may have been a favorite cake, but the real winners were the Food Pantry and the people we serve. We’re so proud of the scouts, their parents, and scout leaders,” said Miller.

The raffle was conducted earlier this month at East Elementary during a Pinewood Derby competition, which is a longtime scouting event.

Eleven churches make the Spearfish Community Pantry possible, taking turns each month to provide volunteers to operate the pantry. Each church is represented on the pantry board of directors.

American Business Women tour pantry

Several local members of the American Business Women's Association toured the Spearfish Community Food Pantry last week (1/20/11) to gain an understanding of the operation. They were also kind enough to present a cash donation that will help the pantry in the purchase of food that is routinely distributed to needy families in the Spearfish and St. Onge communities.

RSVP supper benefits Spearfish Pantry

Snow and cold didn't stop a few hundred people from braving the weather and forging their way to Countryside Community Church last Monday (1/17/11) for some hot chili and soup -- not to mention some scrumptious cookies!

January 17th was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and was also a National Day of Service with the slogan "A Day On -- not a Day Off." RSVP and many other national programs provide a variety of volunteer activities on this special day.

It was the 12th year in a row that the RSVP program headquartered at Black Hills State University has joined forces with area churches to sponsor the event, which benefits the Spearfish Community Food Pantry. Entertainment was provided by members of the Spearfish Middle School Chorus, who shared lots of delightful music as folks chowed down on several varieties of chili cooked up by the churches -- and a "special" recipe potato soup provided by the Spearfish Senior Citizen's Center.

Not only did lots of folks leave with full tummies and happy hearts -- the event raised more than 243 pounds of food for the pantry, along with more than $714 in cash donations.

Pantry receives support from VFW Auxiliary

The Spearfish Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary has stepped forward with a generous donation to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

Auxiliary President Deb Turner presented Pantry Treasurer Larry Weiers with the $200 check from VFW Post 5860 Auxiliary. The short presentation ceremony took place yesterday (1/17/11) in the Pantry lobby at 141 Yankee Street in Spearfish.

Wreath sales in October and November allowed the auxiliary to take another step forward in their goal of blanketing the entire Black Hills National Cemetery with wreaths, helping to demonstrate appreciation to veterans. Revenues from those wreath sales has also allowed the organization to provide valuable support to both the Good Shepherd Clinic and the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

"The VFW Auxiliary does so many great things throughout this area," said Pantry President Karen Miller. "Their gift to the pantry supports our ongoing mission to serve needy families in the Spearfish and St. Onge areas. We are deeply appreciative of their support."

Chili and soup supper set for Monday, January 17th

For some 12 years now, the BHSU RSVP program has worked with area churches and the Spearfish Senior Center to provide a community chili/soup supper to benefit the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

This year, the supper is scheduled for Monday, January 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Countryside Community Church in southeast Spearfish. The address is 625 Woodland Drive. The cost of admission for this tasty event is a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

January 17th is Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and is also a National Day of Service with the slogan “A Day On, not a Day Off,” RSVP and many national programs provide volunteer activities for this special day.

BHSU RSVP Director Nancy Wietgrefe says, "RSVP works with area churches to provide a roaster of chili. The senior center has always made potato soup, for non-chili lovers to enjoy the evening, as well. RSVP volunteers also bake bars or cookies for the event. Then, RSVP volunteers, along with community volunteers and some from the area schools, work together to provide an evening of fellowship and entertainment, to support such a worthy cause."

"It’s important for RSVP to bring middle school, high school, BHSU students all together with the community to support the food pantry. It teaches these students more about the community needs and that any contribution can make a difference."

Last year, about 380 people attended the chili and soup supper, raising nearly $1,500 and more than 300 pounds of food for the food pantry.

The public is welcome -- and encouraged -- to attend!

Zonta's "Festival of Trees" supports Pantry

The Zonta Club of Spearfish will stage their 2010 Festival of Trees this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 2-4, at the Spearfish Park Pavilion.

While there are a few events with an admission fee, Festival exhibits are open to the public free of charge from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Senior Tea from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday (12/2) is also free. Community Music Concerts are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Admission for Adults is $5; Students and Seniors are $2.

Friday (12/3) features a Social from 6-7 p.m., followed by the Auction at 7 p.m. The evening will culminate with a Dance. $10 wristbands for admittance to the Friday night events are available at the door -- or from Black Hills Pioneer, Black Hills Travel, Maddison's Styling Salon, and the Real Estate Center.

The Zonta Club has been a long-time supporter of the Spearfish Community Food Pantry, and this year is no exception. They are encouraging attendees to bring a non-perishable food product for the pantry. Zonta is dedicated to serving our community by recognizing and supporting the needs of women and children.

Pantry makes news with Open House

The Spearfish Community Food Pantry had a very successful Open House on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the new pantry location -- 3100 First Avenue in Spearfish in the Spearfish Recreation Center building. Entry to the pantry is near the intersection of Yankee Street and 5th Street. The above photo and caption was carried in the September 28, 2010 edition of the Black Hills Pioneer.
